Traffic Surveillance

Last Update: May 9, 2012

Co-Chairman: Jessie Turner – The Boeing Company
Co-Chairman: Bob Saffell - Rockwell Collins

APIM 10-010: ISS with ADS-B OUT & ADS-B IN Capability (pdf, 28K)
APIM 11-001: Mode S Transponder and Traffic Computer update (Supplement 4 to 718A and Supplement 1 to 735B) (pdf, 111K)

Goal: Maintain Traffic and Surveillance standards which define avionics airborne equipment with Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II), Air Traffic Control Transponder (ATCRBS/Mode S), and/or Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out/In functionalities. Increase flight crew situational awareness and establish enabling platform for future surveillance capabilities.

ARINC Characteristic 735A, Mark 2 Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), provides the necessary interface and protocol definition to accommodate requirements per RTCA-DO185A, Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for TCAS II Airborne Equipment. The function of TCAS II is to determine the range and bearing of other aircraft equipped with Mode S/ATCRBS transponders with respect to the location of own aircraft. The system monitors the trajectory of these aircraft with the purpose of determining if any of them constitute a potential collision threat and if so, displaying traffic and guidance advisories to the pilot so that an optimum minimum separation is maintained.

ARINC Characteristic 735B, Traffic Computer TCAS and ADS-B Functionality, describes airborne equipment with TCAS functions and interfaces and protocols necessary to support Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) based on reception of ADS-B In data and Traffic Information Services-Broadcast (TIS-B) data.

ARINC Characteristic 718A, Mark 4 Air Traffic Control Transponder (ATCRBS/Mode S) describes a standard Mark 4 ATCRBS/Mode S transponder with Extended Interface Functions (TIF). It defines a commercial air traffic transponder capable of supporting TCAS functions, advanced surveillance defined by ICAO as CNS/ATM, Automatic Dependent Surveillance- Broadcast (ADS-B) per RTCA DO-260B, Extended Squitter, and enhanced surveillance capabilities as defined in the ICAO Manual on Mode S Specific Services.

ARINC Characteristic 768, Integrated Surveillance System (ISS) describes an airborne equipment system that performs multiple surveillance functions. The ISS may include components or modules that may perform a combination of the following functions: TCAS II, Air Traffic Transponder (ATCRBS/Mode S), Weather Radar/Predictive Windshear, Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS)/Reactive Windshear (RWS), and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out/In.
